WHAT IS EXERCISES IN SOUND

Exercises in Sound is an experiment in audio storytelling. One short scene, re-imagined over and again, exploring how narrative is affected by changes big and small to details of design, editing, performance, music, and all the tools of narrative audio.

INSPIRATIONS

This project is inspired by Raymond Queneau's Exercises in Style and Matt Madden's 99 Ways to Tell a Story: Exercises in Style (2005), which conducted similar experiments in prose and comics respectively. Exercises in Style was first published in France in 1947. Alexander drew his inspiration from Barbara Wright's 2013 English language translation.

SUPPORTING INSTITUTIONS

Emerson College

The Affiliated Faculty Professional Development Fund (AFDF) supports the scholarly and creative activities of the affiliated faculty members of Emerson College. In 2024, Exercises in Sound was selected to receive funding.
