WHAT IS EXERCISES IN SOUND
Exercises in Sound is an experiment in audio storytelling. One short scene, re-imagined over and again, exploring how narrative is affected by changes big and small to details of design, editing, performance, music, and all the tools of narrative audio.
INSPIRATIONS
This project is inspired by Raymond Queneau's Exercises in Style and Matt Madden's 99 Ways to Tell a Story: Exercises in Style (2005), which conducted similar experiments in prose and comics respectively. Alexander first encountered Madden's take on the concept in his days as a webcomics creator, and immediately adopted it as a tool for growing his own craft, as well as for working with students. Madden's own inspiration, Exercises in Style was first published in France in 1947. Alexander's introduction was Barbara Wright's 2013 English language translation, which he continues to use as a text in his creative writing classes.
